            USE OF WORDS IN PAIRS

                        YEAR 1997  TO YEAR 2006

YEAR 1997

1. ACCIDENT; INCIDENT

ACCIDENT ( A SUDDEN EVENT INVOLVING DANGER आकस्मिक घटना) :- Three persons were killed in bus accident yesterday.

INCIDENT (A SIMPLE HAPPENING घटना ) :- Do not take it seriously; it is a minor accident.

2. MEAT; MEET 

MEET (मुलाकात या भेंट होना) :- I am very glad to meet you.

MEAT (मांस):- His bread and meat are sweet./ Vegetarians do not eat meat.

3. SCENT; SENT

SENT (PAST SIMPLE & PAST PARTICIPLE OF SEND):- I sent a card to my son on his birthday.

SCENT (A DISTINCTIVE SMELL, ESPECIALLY ONE THAT IS PLEASANT):- I love the scent of summer flowers.

4. FAMOUS; NOTORIOUS

NOTORIOUS (USED IN A BAD SENSE कुख्यात ):- Gabbar was a notorious dacoit.

FAMOUS (HAVING FAME, USED IN A GOOD SENSE प्रसिद्ध) :- Lala Laajpat Rai was a famous leader.

5. GATE; GAIT

GAIT (MANNER OF WALK चाल ):- That beautiful girl has a graceful and sexy gait.

GATE (LARGE DOOR दरवाजा):- You should not enter through the main gate.  

YEAR 1998

6. PRESCRIBE; PROSCRIBE

PROSCRIBE ( TO BANISH):- The minister was proscribed by the king.

PRESCRIBE ( TO DIRECT):- The doctor has prescribed three doses of medicine after four hours daily.

8. ASCENT; ASSENT

ASSENT (AGREEMENT):- The President gave his assent to the bill.

ASCENT (WAY UP) :- The ascent of the hill is difficult.

9. ELDER; OLDER 

ELDER :- He is my elder brother.

OLDER:- The clerk is older than the officer.

10. EMINENT; IMMINENT

IMMINENT :- There are dark clouds in the sky & rain is imminent.

EMINENT :- Newton was an eminent scientist.

YEAR 2004

11. STATIONARY; STATIONERY

STATIONERY (WRITING MATERIAL):- I am going to market to purchase several stationery items for the office.

STATIONARY (FIXED):- Earth is not stationary, it moves around the sun.

12. PLAIN; PLAN

PLAN ( A DETAILED PROPOSAL FOR DOING OR ACHIEVING SOMETHING):- He planned everything well.

PLAIN (EASY, SIMPLE):- One should try to write his thoughts in plain language.

13. GATE; GAIT

17. CONTINUOUS; CONTINUAL 

CONTINUAL (OF REGULAR OR  FREQUENT RECURRENCE) :- I can not do any work at home because of continual disturbances.

CONTINUOUS (UNINTERRUPTED IN TIME):- His name was struck off the rolls because of his continuous absence.

18. EXCESS; ACCESS 

ACCESS (APPROACH, ACCESSIBLE पैठ ):- I have no access to the Chief Minister.

EXCESS (MORE THAN SUFFICIENT जरुरत से ज्यादा):- Excess of everything is bad.

20. HANDSOME; BEAUTIFUL

BEAUTIFUL (VERY ATTRACTIVE, PLEASANT मनोहर, बहुत अच्छा , शानदार ):- She was a very beautiful woman.

HANDSOME (GOOD LOOKING रमणीय, रूपवान):- He is a handsome lad.

YEAR 2008

21. BESIDE; BESIDES

BESIDES (IN ADDITION TO के अतिरिक्त ):- Besides Hindi, I know English & Urdu.

BESIDE (NEAR नजदीक , पास):- The child sat beside his mother.

22. PRINCIPAL; PRINCIPLE

PRINCIPLE (RULE OF CONDUCT):- My father is a man of principle.

PRINCIPAL(CHIEF, HEAD):- Who is the principal of your college?

23. AMIABLE; AMICABLE

AMICABLE (FRIENDLY मित्रवत ):- Finally they come to an amicable settlement.

AMIABLE (LOVABLE प्यार योग्य):- She is not only a beautiful but also an amiable girl.

24. COMA; COMMA 

COMMA (MARK OF PUNCTUATION कोमा ) :- One should be careful about proper use of comma.

COMA (STATE OF SENSELESSNESS बेहोशी ) :- The patient has been in coma since Monday.

25. FLEE; FLY

FLY (MOVE QUICKLY THROUGH THE AIR):- Birds are flying in the sky.

FLEE (TO RUN AWAY भाग जाना ):- He tried to flee from the sight but he was caught.

YEAR 2017

26. ZERO INTEREST; ZERO TOLERANCE

ZERO TOLERANCE  (Refusal to accept antisocial behaviour, typically by strict and uncompromising application of the law):- The Police announced that there will be zero tolerance for looters.

ZERO INTEREST (A situation in which no money is charged by a bank or other financial organization for lending money):- They offer a period of zero interest for new customers.

27. VOTE OF THANKS; VOTE ON ACCOUNT

VOTE OF THANKS (धन्यवाद प्रस्ताव ):- I would like to propose a vote of thanks to our host.

VOTE ON ACCOUNT (लेखा अनुदान):- Funds made available under vote on account shall not be utilized for expenditure on a new service.

28. VICINITY; VICIOUS CIRCLE

VICINITY (निकटता, पड़ोस , पास-पड़ोस):- There were a hundred or so hotels in the vicinity of the railway station.

VICIOUS CIRCLE (दुष्चक्र):- We mus try to break this vicious circle.

29. PRETEST; PRETEXT

PRETEST (पूर्व परीक्षण):- A simple pretest will quickly assess for the researcher errors that can be quickly connected.

PRETEXT (बहाना, चल-कपट):- He excuse himself on the pretext of a stomach upset.

30. PREPARATION LEAVE; PREPARATORY TO RETIREMENT

PREPARATION LEAVE (तैयारी के लिए छुट्टी):- He needs some preparation leave for examination.

PREPARATORY TO RETIREMENT (निवृतिपूर्व/ रिटायर होने से पहले ):- Only senior employees take leave preparatory to retirement.

31. MINOR; MINER 

MINER (ONE WHO WORKS IN MINE खान पर काम करने वाला):- He is a miner, works in a coal mine.

MINOR (UNDERAGE छोटा ):- Minors are not allowed to open current account in Banks.

32. SERIAL; CEREAL

SERIAL ( IN REGULAR SUCCESSION WITHOUT GAP):- What is the serial number of this product?

CEREAL (MADE OF GRAIN):- I have bowl of cereal every morning.
